How PeaceCenters came into being
In July of 2002, the Board of Directors of Religious Science
International created a Peace Committee with the intention of taking a clear and
public stand for peace. Some of the early events of the Peace Committee included co-sponsoring the
Worldwide Prayer for Peace and Peacewalk 2002 in Memphis, Tennessee.
In November, a wonderful new idea took form - the creation of
PeaceCenters all over the world. Initially, the PeaceCenters came from the
member churches of Religious Science International.
Each church that became a PeaceCenter identified a person to be that Center’s designated PeaceKeeper.
The main work of the PeaceKeeper was to
coordinate and communicate the church’s peace activities with the Religious
Science International Peace Committee.
Currently, the RSI Peace Committee, in conjunction with the
Religious Science International Board of Education, is developing educational
materials that can be used by the Peace Centers in teaching peaceful living
skills. The current chair is Rev. Mike Gerdes
.
PeaceCenters all over the world have participated in events like
the International Day of
Peace, the Season for
NonViolence, and have planted Peace Poles. Meditation groups, courses in
living more mindfully and more peacefully and other rich opportunities to stand
for peace take place each week at many PeaceCenters.
